Regatta Spotlights: Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta

We're heading out to Marblehead, MA for the next installment of our regatta spotlight series and getting an in-depth look at the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta. This regatta is a marquis event in the summer season on Massachusetts' North Shore and takes place this year on August 9 and 10. CYOA chair Timmy Dittrich answered a few questions about Corinthian Classic:

What is the history and tradition behind this regatta, and how does it influence the experience for participants?

Timmy Dittrich: The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta has been going strong for over 25 years. Born from the “Emperor’s Cup” back in the 80s and the subsequent Friendship Sloop Regatta, the Corinthian Classic was formed to honor “Classic Yachts and Characters”. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead has always played host, offering entries all the amenities and waterfront service one would want. The Corinthian Classic is the premier event of the season for the CYC.

What sets the fleet of classic yachts at your regatta apart from other similar events? Are there specific types of yachts or notable vessels that regularly participate?

TD: The Corinthian Classic has always been known for its strong mix of Vintage, Classic, Modern Classic and One Design fleets - especially the International One Design. In recent years more and more Modern Classic Division yachts have discovered the Corinthian Classic as a place to sail their boats competitively and enjoy the camaraderie and hospitality of the two-day event. The Corinthian Classic encourages the use of spinnakers and is conducted using the Pursuit format which makes starting easy and safe; yet brings close, competitive, and exciting moments at the finish line.

What is special at your event to celebrate the classic yacht racing community during the event?

TD: As the premier event of the regatta season at the CYC, the program includes live music on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon. The shoreside festivities are open to all CYC Members and the townspeople of Marblehead. A sit down dinner on Saturday evening is attended by close to 300 participants every year. Beverages abound!

What aspects of your regatta make it a must-attend event for sailors and enthusiasts—whether it’s the location, race format, social atmosphere, or something else?

TD: The Corinthian Classic is unique for a few different reasons. The hospitality and waterfront services are what you would expect from one of the East Coast's largest yacht clubs - fantastic! The moorings for entrants are complimentary (first come first serve). The racing takes place on open ocean waters. Marblehead is truly a historic harbor (think birthplace of America’s Navy; home of yacht designers Nathaneal and L. Francis Herreshoff, Carl Alberg, Edward and Starling Burgess, Ray Hunt, and Ted Hood; Boston Yacht Club, Corinthian Yacht Club, Eastern Yacht Club). Plus, Marblehead is closer than you think!

How does your regatta engage the wider community, and are there unique activities or events that connect spectators and non-sailors with the world of classic yachts?

TD: By the time the second weekend of August comes around all of Marblehead knows of the Corinthian Classic through extensive media outreach. EVERYONE is always welcome to the event but those who enjoy it the most are those who get out to watch the starts and follow the racing from mark to mark.

The first regattas of the 2025 Classic Yacht Challenge Series are just around the corner! Sign up today to make sure you're part of all the action!
