For Spirit and Her Crew, The Camaraderie of CYCS Make it a Can’t Miss Regatta Series

For 37 years, the classic yacht Spirit has been owned by Lars Forsberg, who considers himself a custodian of this historic vessel. And since 1987, Lars and his family have taken that guardianship seriously, maintaining the grandeur and heritage of the Hodgdon Brothers schooner built in 1934.

Spirit was originally built to be a family cruising vessel. It was designed by John G. Alden and has a sister ship that won the storied Newport Bermuda Race. Over the years, the boat has gone by a few different names: first Discovery III, then Vela, and finally its current name. As Spirit’s third owner, Lars has brought her through three restorations, first in 1988, then 1992, and more recently in 2019.

“We take a lot of pride in taking care of her ourselves,” said Lars’ son Peter, a key member of Spirit’s crew. “It’s a total labor of love.” One of the top benefits of the work on the vessel for the father-son duo is sailing each summer in CYOA’s Classic Yacht Challenge Series (CYCS).

“It’s a great reason to get out on the water and use the boat more,” said Lars. Beyond the high-class racing, Spirit’s crew love the opportunity CYCS provides to see some of the country’s most beautiful scenery. Moving between regattas provides the group and their families the chance for adventures. One highlight of 2024’s CYCS for them was witnessing a pod of humpback whales while on the delivery between Marblehead and Nantucket, MA.

However, their favorite thing about both CYOA and CYCS is the camaraderie that is fostered each summer between members of the fleet. “The members we sail with and against are super welcoming and friendly. They love talking about racing and the boats themselves,” Peter added. Lars encourages anyone considering participating to fully embrace the camaraderie and community of boat owners who make up the CYOA.

The Spirit crew also advises preparation. With a vessel like theirs that is 90 percent original, it can take some time to ensure its seaworthiness and take necessary steps for maintenance between regattas. They also say that locking down a solid crew early can be helpful. “I enjoy having younger sailors on board,” Lars mentioned, feeling that the youth is key to the upkeep of this historic fleet.

The top piece of advice both Lars and Peter have for those considering joining CYOA and sailing in this summer’s CYCS is to come and meet the fleet! Like everyone involved, they want to see the classic sailing community grow and welcome new members with open arms.

So what are you waiting for? More information on joining the CYOA can be found on our website. Stay tuned in the new year for more information on the 2025 CYCS and other events!
