One of the greatest aspects of the classic yachting world is that it is an expansive umbrella covering a wide array of designs, time periods, and sailing enthusiasts. The CYOA supports this by including not just historic boats in our membership, but also newer boats that embrace the classic spirit. One of these modern classics is Eliot Merrill’s Arcadia.
Merrill was inspired to commission Arcadia by the cruiser-race ethos of his family’s J/42. He sought out a way to combine performance with classic materials. “I started having serious conversations in 2019 including with Drew and Cabot Lyman as well as with designer Kevin Dibley,” Merrill said. “Through these conversations, we modified some aspects of the design and I became convinced that the LM 46 design and especially the classic/modern cold-molded technology was a beautiful, high-performance, and unique process that fit my desires.”
Arcadia was built at CYOA Diamond Partner Lyman-Morse in Maine during the COVID pandemic, with Merrill periodically stopping in to check on her progress. Launched in 2022, the final product exceeded the owner’s expectations. “A phenomenal design and beautiful build by expert craftsmen.”
Since entering the water, Merrill has put Arcadia to the test in several prestigious regattas. In addition to CYCS contests like the Camden Classics Cup, taking on two Newport Bermuda Races, two Wetherill Races, the Annapolis Newport Race (first in class), the Ida Lewis Distance Race (first in class), and the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race. Merrill added that the challenge and camaraderie of racing Arcadia what makes it all worth it. “We are all amateurs and enjoy the beauty and challenge of the races together.”
Arcadia calls both Muscongus Bay, Maine and Stonnington, Conn. home. This summer, Merrill plans to take on yet another Newport Bermuda Race, as well as several of the 2026 CYCS events aboard Arcadia. “I think sailing one of the most beautiful boats on the starting line or out for a sail is an honor,” Merrill said of what he enjoys most about sailing a contemporary classic.
Merrill added that owning a boat like Arcadia is a privilege in and of itself. His love and passion for classic sailing and sailboats drew him to join the CYOA membership. Being a part of this unique and convivial group of classic owners and sailors is special to him.
